The Banyan Tree

Walking Front Street Again: A Letter to the Historic Heart of Lahaina

September 16, 2026

On August 1, 2026, a quiet milestone echoed along the West Maui coastline. Front Street—the soul of Lahaina town—officially reopened to traffic between Pāpalaua and Shaw streets for the first time in nearly three years. A few weeks later as my husband and I drove down the street for the first time in over three years, there was a soft heartbreaking feeling yet a hopeful one as we passed by the Banyan Tree.

For anyone who knew Lahaina before August 2023, Front Street was never just a road. It was where the ocean spray caught the setting sun over the seawall, where the shade of a 150-year-old banyan tree offered relief from the afternoon heat, and where local families and travelers walked side-by-side to grab shaved ice, browse galleries, or listen to live acoustic sets floating out of oceanfront lanai.

A Kuleana in Progress

Returning to Front Street today is a deeply moving experience. It is not a finished postcard, but rather a active, breathing space of healing and work. Repaved asphalt, freshly repaired seawalls, sturdy oceanfront railings, and young, newly planted native trees sit alongside protective fencing marking spaces where homes and historic shops are being carefully rebuilt.

Local leaders call it a kuleana in progress—a place of responsibility, respect, and quiet steady momentum. Iconic local establishments, including Kimo's and the ʻUlu o Lele Marketplace, have begun leading the charge back into the commercial heart, alongside dozens of independent shops and dining spaces spread throughout West Maui.

Visiting with Respect (Mālama)

If you plan to visit West Maui, your presence can directly support the families, local artisans, and hospitality workers driving this recovery. Keep a few vital guidelines in mind:

  • Honor the boundaries: Fenced-off parcels remain private, sacred spaces for families working through their personal rebuilding processes. Always stay on public sidewalks and paved access routes.
  • Support local businesses: Dine at reopening local spots, shop at local artisan markets, and hire local tour operators across Kāʻanapali, Napili, Kapalua, and Lahaina.
  • Practice patience: Expect intermittent construction delays and ongoing harbor restoration work nearby.

The story of Front Street isn't just about what was lost—it's about the deep resilience of a community stepping forward into its future, one block at a time.
